Overview: This three-part evening (October 11, 18, & 25th from 4pm to 6pm) workshop series has been specifically designed for the special education classroom. Each participant will receive an apron and the “Tools” to build a Skill Builders’ Essential Toolkit for their classrooms. The following Items and ideas will be showcased during the workshop:
- Statements vs. Questions;
- Consistent routine = Structured teaching;
- Task analysis;
- Visual supports;
- SHOW cards;
- Sensory Supports.
The series will begin by introducing the “Skill Builders’ Tool Belt” and an overview of the 10 Essential Tools for your Special Education Classroom. Classroom setup, teaching techniques, online resources for timer options, simple supports, and how visuals carry over into real life will also be discussed. Sensory supports and movement within the classroom will be explored.
Course Faculty Members:
Katie Dietrich – Ms. Dietrich has spent the last 15 years working with individuals on the Autism Spectrum and with other mental, behavioral, and physical disabilities. She is currently working as a primary special education teacher. Katie lives in New Bremen with her husband and two children on their farm.
Nancy Mauter – Ms. Mauter has spent the last 20 years working with transition age youth and young adults with Multiple Disabilities teaching daily living, vocational, and social skills. She is currently working as a Transition Specialist part time and runs her family owned business. Nancy lives in St. Marys with her husband and two kids.
